I have some six string electric guitars I use slide, flat pick and fingerpick. Got to thinking yesterday should I try Bass? Today I see this, amazing… This tells me without a doubt… Shopping for Bass now.
I wish, but it seems being a bass god like VW doesnt necessarily translate to making great instructional vidoes, hes skipping over the fundamentals as if hes trying to explaing thump in quickest way possible even it means skipping CRUCIAL steps. Hopefully one of the other thump lesson videos are better because as much as I love VW, this video was not particularly helpful
I would love to double thumb but when I come up with my thumb it hurts. The more I practice it the more it makes my thumb sore. Maybe I need better strings idk
Met him a couple of years ago at the Blue Note Jazz Club. Told him he was my idol and played bass so much before but I stopped. He replied, "That's so sad. How come?" and I genuinely felt his sadness. I told him it was due to work and all. He said without judgment, "try to keep playing if you can and if it's still something you love." I've been playing the bass since then from time to time. He's such a kind person. Victor's mastery of the bass is at a point where it transcends mere playing. It is spiritual to him and he wants to share his gift. And you see that the way he teaches. Like he believes you can do it. Whether you believe in God or not, you can't help but respect and admire him.
I've been playing bass since I was 15 years old back in 1981, that's 42 years and although I'm very good at slap bass, I could never grasp the concept of the double slap technique. I watched Victor's RUclips video 3 times in two days and I swear, it sounds like I've been double slapping for 40 years!!! That was an amazing video!!! Thank you Victor!!!!!
I have been playing bass for 33 years and I am blind so never ever got the concept of double thumbing even though I slap the crap out of my basses. Hugest thanks to Victor. That makes sense. I wish I knew this all those years I was teaching.
This guy is awesome. Victor seems like a great person and a low pressure teacher. Very simplistic in his approach. He even has a calm voice to go along with his method. Oh yeah, a great bass player too!
This guy is really an inspiring person, a master not only in music, in life. Each video I see with him, I learn a bit more about my self. Thank you for sharing this.
The tone is better when you do the upstroke than other tutorials I've seen on this tech. They say you can't make it sound the same but somehow you do,like you make it miss the fingernail somehow.
This is by far the best lesson on this elusive subject. Thank you Victor, sir, for demystifying techniques while always encouraging our musical spirit!
Bassist for 30 years myself and never liked slapping. I hate doing it and dont like the sound of it, just not my style, but i could listen to vic talk about it all day lol. His explanations are satisfying.
my problem with double thumbing is the action required to pull it off. I can do the basic of it, but my fingerstyle will suffer because action is too low and I pluck too hard. I can't pluck softly because it won't produce the tone I want. anyway, it's great that someone like Victor Wooten is not afraid to share his secrets.
treat this as a complete new technique, i learned thump on the guitar and it makes you feel like a beginner again, renew on my basics and learning how to thump made my normal playing better! you have to go in with a new mind
Bassist Doug Rauch ( Santana, Billy Cobham, George Duke etc) was the first bassist I ever saw doing this technique and that was back in the early 70's. Check out him using this double thumbing on Billy Cobham's " Life and Times" album. The song " Natural high" is a good example.
Leave it to Victor to explain what no one else could in the first minute. I never got how this worked until he said it's just like a pick which I have been doing 40 years now lol
I like to see Sweetwater working with popular musicians. I bought the schecter apocalypse bass recently through them. Great service, one stop shop, great service, and the Costumer service was 👌🏼
I've found the Alain Caron variation, which is more a motion that from an oblique angle slaps past the string to rest on the fingerboard then out and away from the fingerboard to pop the string, to be more comfortable and producing a preferable sound to me than an up and down motion.
" Music is always playing " To understand the actual meaning of this quote u have to read the Music Lesson book by victor i swear its highly rewarding !!!
The band Oni has a song called barn burner. The bass player does a play through with a four string bass that is an excellent example of double thumb technique .
A master in action! Who's grabbing their bass to try this technique right now? ✋
Me
I have some six string electric guitars I use slide, flat pick and fingerpick.
Got to thinking yesterday should I try Bass?
Today I see this, amazing…
This tells me without a doubt…
Shopping for Bass now.
Wojtek Pilichowski bas master from POLAND auuuuu
Definitely me! The double thumb pop he shows at the end is the best!

"No one's gonna hire you to do that anyways" Million dollar words lol Great content!
That made me laugh and was comforting to hear lol
It’s like that golf saying, “you drive for show and putt for dough.” I apply this to bass playing and say, “you slap for show and pick for dough.”
It caught me off guard. Bassists are such nihilists. 😊
Victor Wooten is just as incredible and as natural a teacher as he is a bassist. Truly one of the best out there.
One of the best ever

@@doedoebird6614it should get better once you build up a callus. If it keeps hurting longer than a week take a small break.
@@standric thx

With so many RUclips videos showcasing this, it takes the master of bass guitar playing to speak of it in small terms.
Brilliant, just brilliant.
I have so much respect for Mr. Wooten as a teacher, a real teacher… he is giving you knowledge to keep it going. Right on Vic!
This man is a huge reservoir of knowledge. Every video I can get of this guy playing is just magic
The GOAT is here. What an absolute genius musician not just bassist. Thanks for the great lesson Vic!

A new HD version of a classic lesson from one of the best teachers in the business.

2:50 I love that he puts rhythm first :)
Struggled with this hard until I thought of my thumb as a pick. Such a simple idea but helped me immensely
@III hang in there and keep having fun with it! You will be a master before you know it!
Quality content, Sweetwater. Keep 'em comin'
Word man !! Keep it coming . .
This guy is awesome. Victor seems like a great person and a low pressure teacher. Very simplistic in his approach. He even has a calm voice to go along with his method. Oh yeah, a great bass player too!
Most masters of music are not good teachers but Victor is an Exception🙌
This man is the best teacher of bass ever. I love how he teaches
This guy is really an inspiring person, a master not only in music, in life. Each video I see with him, I learn a bit more about my self. Thank you for sharing this.

FANTASTIC BASS GUITAR PLAYER!
Now Sweetwater will bring another hero of mine: Mr Abraham Laboriel snr - to share a tip or technique. Keep it up, Sweetwater.
Denbigh represent I love this man and he’s my inspiration for my bass playing in my band I’m in
Hey thank you for this video Victor! I'm loving playing stuff with this technique.👍🙏👍

Awesome Victor wooten 🔥🔥🔥
Excellent lesson, thanks for posting.
you got to love Victor!
Awesome technique, you can see why Victor has such strong fingers, it destroys your thumb when learning it 😅. Loved the rhythm practice concept.
Please Make more Bass technique Videos!
I have been practicing for years this video helped me just get that lil bit I needed Victor is everything!

Thanks for making this video
I remember him talking about Regi showing him that when he was younger. Awesome family!
Leave it to Victor to explain what no one else could in the first minute. I never got how this worked until he said it's just like a pick which I have been doing 40 years now lol

Man, Victor Wooten teaching bass is like Einstein teaching Physics. It’s way beyond my comprehension but I’m damn sure glad it’s there.
The legend himself.
Thank You!
